Of Turkish descent and lived all his life in Melbourne Australia, Yahya Hassan was Sifu Maurice's first formal student and began his training at 14 years of age he has competed in Australian Martial Arts Championships and Loong Fu Pai tournaments. Yayah has always competed in black belt divisions since his first tournament at age 16. Yahya's father enrolled his son to train at Melbourne Sport Street Wing Chun Kung Fu in order to calm his anger at school, he was also being attacked by small groups after school. In year 9 Yahya was was faced with a older year 11 bully in the school yard, when the bully tried to attack Yahya used double tan sao then elbowed to the head, his attacker fell to the ground, the following week the Vice principle of the school asked Yahya if he would teach Kung Fu at P.E. class to which Yahya politely declined.
